“There is nothing that makes its way more directly to the soul than beauty,” said author Joseph Addison.

From the cave paintings in Lascaux, to Chinese celadon pottery, to the architecture of the Sydney Opera house; beauty has always been important to humans. We wanted tools and buildings and modes of transport that were practical and reliable, but we lso made them beautiful. Beauty in nature is probably our greatest joy as a species. We revel in a waterfall, or a turquoise beach, or an emerald forest, or a ruby red desert. Color and symmetry, and surprising shapes delight us when we’re happy, and comfort us when we’re sad. Beauty in our environments is even said to boost the immune system.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as
life lasts.” Rachel Carson.

Our souls need beauty.

The Outdoor Circle was started to preserve the beauty of our Hawaiian Islands. The North Shore Outdoor Circle, the local branch, works to continue that tradition by supporting thoughtful and forwardlooking design and landscaping standards that value trees and native plants, and by preserving green space,
community gathering areas, walking spaces, and scenic vistas. We are working to advance a general
sense of culture and place. In other words, we support design done right.

NSOC landscaped and continues to help maintain Weed Circle so that it is a pleasant gateway to the town of Haleiwa. We spearheaded and oversee maintenance of the Ke Ala Pupukea Bike Path which runs from Shark’s Cove to Backyards. We continue to fight to open up view planes all across the North Shore. For example, we are working with City and County and other agencies to open up the view plane at Waimea Bay, so that visitors to the North Shore can experience this breathtaking vista.

Finally the NSOC takes the opportunity to acknowledge people in the community who do their part.

Every year, we recognize those members of our community, both private citizens, and businesses, who bring joy to our lives by making their landscapes more beautiful. NSOC Beautification Committee members,
Dawn Peerson, and Mary Lou Lee, go around the entire North Shore, visiting all the small and large neighborhoods, looking for those exteriors which surprise and delight. At the biannual General Membership
Meeting this past September, they recognized these people by presenting them with the coveted NSOC Beautification Award.

Here are this year’s recipients.
