A Few Simple Steps for a Healthy Pregnancy By Melissa Ching, MD, OB/GYN

Step 1- Take a Prenatal Vitamin.
Being on a prenatal vitamin is one of the simplest things you can do for the health of your pregnancy. In fact, taking a prenatal vitamin before getting pregnant is even better. The reason is that the development of a baby’s neurologic system, which includes the brain and spinal cord is dependent on folic acid. This development happens very early in pregnancy, often before you know you are pregnant. The appropriate level of folic acid in your body for this development requires a prenatal vitamin to be taken for about 2-3 months prior to conception. The bottom line is if you are planning on getting pregnant, take a prenatal vitamin before conceiving. Certain women may also need a higher dose of folic acid. Your health care provider can tell you the appropriate dose of folic acid that you require.

Step 2- Start Prenatal Care Early.
Prenatal care during pregnancy is important for the health of baby and mom. Getting in early for prenatal care can increase your chances of having a healthy pregnancy and delivery of baby. Your health care provider will guide you through your pregnancy by providing care, counseling and ordering of the appropriate tests.

Step 3- Take Care of Yourself.
