The Ko‘olauloa Health Center continues its tradition of offering an array of services to both students and the community through the Red Raider Clinic. It is located on the Kahuku High and Intermediate campus. Whether a sports physical is needed or a dental cleaning, working parents appreciate the ease and convenience of a school-based program.

An added advantage to the location is the frontline access to mentoring and job shadowing it provides for students. In recent years, it has been a natural training venue for those seeking post high opportunities in the field of Health. Whether following alongside a physician or learning to do blood pressure checks, the Health Occupations Students of America, or HOSA pathway program has helped to prepare students for real life encounters.

The Ko‘olauloa Health Center Board understands the importance of life-long learning. This year college scholarships were awarded to three deserving seniors. They were chosen based on their academic achievement, personal essay and commitment to a profession in the field of Health. The graduates selected were Pitovao Wong, Aloha Lei Garo and Jaya Belyeu. What was most impressive about each of the recipients was their commitment to giving back to their community after graduation.

As an alumnus of Kahuku High I can’t help but think about the opportunities I have had over the years to serve in Ko’olauloa. If there is one thing I have learned after three decades as a social worker, it’s that, “it takes a village” to raise healthy children. We must work together.

It is our intent moving forward to work collaboratively with school personnel and students to create a quality improvement plan that we can all be a part of.

Congratulations to the class of 2018! We wish you the very best in all future endeavors.
