On June 30, more than 60 Hawaiian Electric employees and their families volunteered to malama the environment by partnering with Malama Pupukea- Waimea (MPW) on their Native Hawaiian Plant Coastal Restoration Project at Shark’s Cove, North Shore O‘ahu. In less than two hours, the volunteers placed 500 native plants into the ground and removed more than 300 pounds of invasive weeds and shrubs. The group’s quick work allowed them to also do an
impromptu beach cleanup which resulted in removing about 50 pounds of trash and marine debris from the shoreline. The community workday is one of several programs offered by MPW to engage community and government partners in their efforts to replenish and sustain the natural and cultural resources of the Pupukea and Waimea ahupua’a for present and future generations.
