The Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Club Juniors, ages 16-18, made club history on Sep. 22 by lining up next to 70 other outrigger canoes on the start line of the Na Wahine O Ke Kai. They were the first juniors crew from the North Shore to compete in the 41-mile race from Moloka‘i to O‘ahu across the rough waters of the Kaiwi Channel. Following months of rigorous training under Coach Tavita Ma‘ea, these young women were prepared mentally and physically for the marathon journey. Light winds made for hot and grueling conditions, but the crew of 12 paddled together with strong hearts and determined minds to successfully complete the crossing in 8 hours and 50 minutes and place 4th in their division. Congratulations to these amazing girls who represent the future of outrigger canoe paddling!

Congratulations also to the Open Women’s crew, coached by Robert Pactol, that finished 15th in their division. The women’s long distance crews would like to send a big mahalo to their generous local sponsors: North Shore Soap Factory, Team Real Estate, and Dr. John Corboy of Hawaiian Eye Center.
