NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has recently replaced three large educational signs at Waimea Bay, Sharks Cove, and at Three Tables (Kalua O Maua) for your viewing pleasure. In partnership with NOAA, Malama Pupukea-Waimea originally installed the “whale signs” in 2015 and continues to maintain them for the public’s benefit. The North Shore’s portion of the statewide Humpback Whale Sanctuary, established in 1992, runs from just North of Hale‘iwa all the way to Kahana.

This is the best time of the year for whale watching. If the water is calm, you may be fortunate enough
to hear male whales sing their love song by just sticking your head a few feet under water. Even when
the waves are big, the huge splash of humpbacks breaching is an amazing show. Although NOAA has reported fewer whales this year than previous years, February is traditionally the month with the most sightings, so you are encouraged to enjoy the spectacular whale watching along the North
Shore!
