Can you believe it’s been a decade? Malama
Loko Ea Foundation (MLEF) is 10 years old! Founded by friends Benson Lee and James Estores, MLEF
continues to restore Loko Ea fishpond while sharing Hawaiian culture, promoting land stewardship
or malama ‘aina, advancing STEM through fishpond education, and fostering community building. Since 2009, MLEF has made global connections
through guest learners and volunteers from Asia,
Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. MLEF coordinates over 150 learning events a year for school and community groups and conducts professional development for public and private school teachers in cultural project-based learning. MLEF arranges cultural tours to educate visitors about Loko Ea’s unique culture, history, and natural environment; has been highlighted on Landon McNamara’s Ha‘ina, Stories of Music and Jack Johnson music videos; and was featured on the TV show Sam Choy in the Kitchen. Prior to Malama Honua, MLEF hosted the crew of the Hokule‘a. MLEF strongly believes in malama ‘aina and is the first Hawaiian fishpond to own a dredge which will deepen the pond for optimal fish growth. In the past decade of serving community, MLEF has touched well over 38,000 guest learners and volunteers!

To commemorate their first 10 years, Malama Loko Ea Foundation is excited to announce Sake & a Sunset to be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019. This culinary fundraising gala will take place on a private beach at Pua‘ena in Hale‘iwa and is an evening for the community to celebrate 10 years of Malama Loko Ea Foundation with Hawai‘i’s locally grown foods and the creativity of chefs.
