I’d like to use this column to introduce our new intern and District 2 Honolulu Youth Commission Representative – Diego Carranza. I am grateful for the work that he is doing for the community, and I am excited to see all the amazing things he will be doing in the future.

I always appreciate hearing from you. Please email me at mweyer@honolulu.gov or call our office at 808-768-5002 if you have any concerns or ideas about how to support or uplift our community.
Aloha!

My name is Diego Carranza. I graduated from Leilehua High School in May, a year early, as Valedictorian with the class of 2023. In high school, I had the privilege to serve as captain of the Speech and Debate Team. During that time I also won the state championship in Congressional Debate. My community work began when I was given the opportunity to intern with Representative Matsumoto during the 2023 Legislative Session. I Currently work as a Family Advocate with the Honolulu Community Action Program (HCAP), helping families island-wide to overcome the hurdles associated with poverty.

I recently began interning with Councilmember Weyer’s Office. So far, I have helped to provide background research on several bills assigned to the Committee that Councilmember Weyer chairs – Housing, Sustainability, and Health. I hope that my time here provides me with the skills and experience
to help further my future ambitions in government
or law, where I hope to continue working with communities and finding sustainable ways to live, economically and socially.

I was also recently appointed to serve as the District 2 Honolulu Youth Commission Representative. The Commission is a collection of appointed youth representatives who provide insight, suggestions, and official opinions to the City and County of Honolulu through the lens of the youth. This commission empowers the youth of O’ahu and provides representation and insight from a population that is often overlooked. Though the new commissioners just started two months ago, we have already begun approving our first fiscal quarter spendings, examining key issues we will be focusing on, and advising the mayor on a potential youth job shadowing program.

One issue that has recently resurfaced in the community are Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles (CRB). For more information, please visit: crbhawaii.org. To report a sighting, or suspected CRB damage, you can:
